How to Play
Choose a time limit of 15, 30, or 60 seconds, then start typing. The clock does not begin when the page loads — it starts on your very first keystroke, so there is no rush to get going and no penalty for reading ahead. Type each highlighted word exactly as shown and press the space bar to submit it and move to the next. A word counts only if it matches letter for letter. Backspace works, but only inside the word you are currently typing; once you press space, that word is locked in and cannot be repaired. Characters are colored as you go — correct in green, wrong in red — and anything you type past the end of a word is always counted as wrong. On mobile, tap the word box to raise your keyboard.
The word stream is drawn from a pool of 200 common English words, reshuffled for every run, so no two tests present the same sequence. When the clock runs out you get a full breakdown: WPM, accuracy, raw WPM, and a count of correct versus incorrect keystrokes. Your best result is stored locally, tracked separately for each of the three time limits, since a 15-second sprint and a 60-second run are genuinely different tests.
How WPM Is Calculated Here
Typing speed is never counted in literal dictionary words, because words differ wildly in length and a test full of short words would flatter you. The universal convention is that five characters equal one word. Your WPM here is (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Type 300 correct characters in 60 seconds and you score exactly 60 WPM.
Two details determine what lands in that "correct characters" total. First, credit is granted per word, not per letter: a word contributes its full length if you typed it perfectly and zero if you did not. Typing "teh" for "the" earns nothing, even though two of the three letters were right. Second, only the letters count — the space you press to submit the word is not included.
That second point is worth knowing if you compare scores across sites. Many typing tests treat the space as the fifth character of a five-character unit. This one does not, and the words in the pool average just under four characters, so the same physical typing speed reads roughly a fifth lower here than on a test that counts delimiters. Compare your result here against your own previous results here, not against a screenshot from somewhere else.
Raw WPM applies the identical formula to every character you submitted, right or wrong. It is your finger speed with accuracy stripped out. Accuracy is a separate measurement entirely: it is the percentage of individual keystrokes that were correct at the instant you pressed them. Deleting a mistake removes it from the screen but not from that statistic — the error already happened. Only typing counts as a keystroke; backspaces themselves are not scored.
One consequence: a word left half-finished when the clock expires contributes nothing at all, because scoring happens when you press space. Those keystrokes still count toward accuracy, but not toward WPM.
What Is a Good WPM?
This is the question everyone actually arrives with, and it deserves a real answer rather than a single number. The honest version has conditions attached.
Casual typists who look at the keyboard and use a few fingers commonly land somewhere in the 20 to 40 WPM range. Around 40 WPM is the figure most often quoted as a typical adult speed on a full-size keyboard, and it is roughly where someone who types daily but never learned a system settles. Competent touch typists generally run 50 to 70 WPM. Roles that involve typing all day — transcription, data entry, court reporting, support work — tend to expect 60 to 80 WPM or better as a working baseline. Above 90 to 100 WPM you are firmly in the fast tier, and sustained speeds well past 120 WPM belong to a small group of people who have practiced deliberately for years.
Every one of those figures assumes plain, common English prose on a familiar full-size keyboard. Change any of those conditions and the number moves a lot. Code, with its brackets and symbols and no predictable word shapes, typically costs an experienced programmer a large fraction of their prose speed. Numbers are slower again. Unfamiliar vocabulary, a language you do not think in, an unfamiliar keyboard, or a phone screen all push the figure down, and none of that reflects on your ability.
Test length matters as well. A 15-second run rewards a short burst and is easier to spike; a 60-second run exposes fatigue, drift, and the occasional catastrophic word. Most people's 15-second score is meaningfully higher than their 60-second score, which is exactly why this test stores them separately. If you want one number that describes you, use the 60-second result.
Gross WPM, Net WPM, and Why Tests Disagree
There are two long-standing ways to report typing speed, and confusing them is the main reason people get wildly different scores in the same afternoon.
Gross WPM counts everything you typed, errors included, divided by five and by the minutes elapsed. It measures how fast your fingers move and nothing else. Net WPM penalizes mistakes; in the classic typing-school formula you subtract your uncorrected errors per minute from your gross speed. The gap between the two numbers is a direct readout of how clean your typing is.
The Raw WPM shown on the results screen is a gross measure. The headline WPM is a strict net measure, and strict in a specific way: instead of docking you per bad character, it discards the entire word. That is harsher than the classroom formula on long words and gentler on nothing. It is, however, closer to what typing is actually for. A sentence with a typo in it is not 97% delivered; it is a sentence someone has to go back and fix.
Why Accuracy Comes First
The arithmetic here is unusually blunt. Because a flawed word scores zero, a mistake does not cost you one character — it costs you every character in that word plus all the time you spent typing them. Mistyping a six-letter word wipes out more than a full word of credit and the fraction of a second it took to produce. Two or three of those in a 15-second run can erase a fifth of your score.
This is why the fastest way to raise your WPM, for almost everyone below about 60, is to slow down by a noticeable margin and stop making errors. Typists who chase raw speed develop a habit of firing keystrokes slightly ahead of their certainty, then repairing the damage. That repair loop is expensive — you have to notice the error, stop, backspace, and re-enter — and it also trains the very timing that caused the problem.
There is a deeper reason accuracy comes first. Typing fast is a motor skill built out of automated sequences, and what you repeat is what becomes automatic. Practicing at a speed where you make frequent errors automates the errors along with everything else. Practicing slightly below your error threshold automates clean movement, and clean movement speeds up on its own with repetition. Aim to hold accuracy above roughly 95% and let speed follow; if you are sitting at 85%, your accuracy is your speed problem.
Touch Typing and Where Your Ceiling Is
Hunt-and-peck typing — finding keys by looking at them, using two to four fingers — has a hard ceiling, and the ceiling is not mainly about finger speed. It is about your eyes. Every key you locate visually costs a search, and every glance back at the screen costs a re-fixation on where you were. Some hunt-and-peck typists get genuinely quick through sheer familiarity, but the technique caps out well below what a trained touch typist reaches, and it makes it nearly impossible to type while reading source material.
Touch typing means each finger owns a fixed region of the keyboard, your hands rest on the home row with index fingers on the two keys with raised bumps, and you never look down. It is slower than your current method for the first week or two, which is why most people abandon it. The payoff is that key locations move from visual search into muscle memory, your eyes stay free for the text, and both hands contribute instead of one leading.
If you are going to switch, switch completely and accept a temporary collapse in speed. Alternating between the old method and the new one is the worst option: you never build the new automatic sequences and you keep the old habits alive. Give it two weeks of daily practice before judging it.
Tips
- Read one or two words ahead of the one you are typing. Your fingers should be executing a word your eyes have already left; typing what you are currently looking at guarantees you wait for your own reading speed.
- Never look down at the keyboard. If you cannot type a key without checking, that is the key to drill, not a reason to peek.
- Keep a steady rhythm rather than sprinting and stalling. Bursts followed by hesitation produce a lower average than an even pace, and they generate most of your errors at the transitions.
- Do not fix a word you have already submitted — you cannot, and trying to breaks your flow. Let it go and keep moving.
- The pool is built from the most common English words, so short high-frequency words like "the", "and", "that", and "with" make up a large share of every run. Getting those to be completely automatic pays more than anything else in the list.
- Sit with your wrists floating rather than planted, shoulders down, and the keyboard close enough that your elbows stay near your sides. Reaching costs speed and accuracy at the same time.
Breaking a Plateau
Nearly everyone stalls at some point, usually after the easy gains from simply typing more have been collected. Repeating full-length tests at that point mostly measures the plateau rather than moving it.
The way out is to find where the time actually goes. During a run, notice which words make you hesitate — they are rarely random. Most typists have a handful of specific letter pairs their hands handle badly, often ones that load the same finger twice or require an awkward reach on the weaker hand. Those pairs are where your seconds disappear, and drilling them specifically for a few minutes beats another twenty generic runs.
Alternate two kinds of session. In an accuracy session, deliberately type at roughly 80% of your top speed and aim for a nearly perfect run; this consolidates clean movement. In a speed session, push past comfortable and accept a messy result; this raises the ceiling you then clean up. Doing only the second kind entrenches errors, and doing only the first never asks for more.
Practice in short sessions on most days rather than one long session occasionally. Motor learning consolidates between sessions, and the back half of a long session is fatigued typing that reinforces exactly what you are trying to remove. Finally, hold your hardware constant while you measure. Switching keyboards, or moving between a laptop and a mechanical board with different key travel, changes your score on its own and makes progress impossible to read.
